Tallulah

A few days after things ended with Logan, I had to see him at the monthly cookout we had to celebrate another good month of work and prosperity. It was tradition, and we went all out for the first one of the year in the hopes it would be another amazing year.

It was also one of the things I pointed to when I got flak from people that I went against tradition and turned up my nose at what came before me.

Well, I’d made it all, so I really didn’t, I just got smarter as technology and more progressed. But if people gave me shit, I’d laugh and tell them we still threw the monthly cookout to celebrate and give back like my ancestors did.

And if they wanted to be there for the slaughtering of the animals, they were more than welcome to join us.

Yeah, I got some faces like I was a heathen. I would poke right back and ask them if they wanted me to be traditional or not.

People had been killing animals to celebrate good fortune and harvests for thousands of years. Hunters killed and handled their own meat all the time.

Sure, I used the magic from killing animals on my land, offering it all up to Gaia, but they didn’t need to know that. To everyone else it was tradition and getting down our roots of harvest and meat and enjoying what we’d done.

Plus, it was fun to freak out the newbies how easily I slit an animal’s throat and didn’t flinch when it was time to take out the guts. Ryan and the older guys placed bets on who would puke as someone always did.

Poor Dane had puked a few times and begged not to be in charge of that ever… He liked meat too much.

It also fell on a Friday this year and was a pretty warm day for the time of year, so we had a lot of people. Everyone who worked for me—even seasonally—was invited and there would be more than enough food.

This time it was a calf, lamb, and two young pigs to represent the blossoming of spring and hopes we had for the year. People brought sides and dessert and there would be enough leftovers for days.

Yum.

Except I had to see Logan. I never missed the cookouts, but now he lived at one of the bunkhouses, so he would be there. I did my best to avoid him, my heart aching if I even caught a glimpse of him.

I felt his eyes on me, but I couldn’t forgive him. I ignored his texts and messages, and eventually I wouldn’t be in such pain.

Or so I kept telling myself. But the damage had been done and it was vast.

Someone like me wasn’t worthy of love. I’d been tainted long ago by the depravity my family had put me through.

He had asked me after why my mother hadn’t stopped it and I’d told him the truth that my mother and grandmother had let it happen.
